Patatas Bravas*

Updated: Apr 18, 2020

Patatas bravas is without a doubt one of the most popular tapas in Spain, and in many of the Spanish restaurants in the United States. These are potatoes fried and tossed with a spicy sauce, hence the name brava (angry). They are a delicious snack and very easy to make at home. This is my humble homemade version, and I hope you enjoy it.

🥣 Cooking Time: 25-30mins

🍲 Serves: 4-5

Ingredientes

7 medium potatoes cut into bite-size pieces (approx. 1-inch) 1 teaspoon of chipotle powder ½ teaspoon of salt ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper ¼ cup of olive oil ¼ medium onion 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (preferably from La Costeña) 1 cup of table cream (such as Nestle Media Crema) 1 Garlic Clove ½ teaspoon of salt ½ teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper* (totally optional for extra heat)

Directions

Preheat your oven to 400F.

1. In a large baking sheet, spread your potatoes and season them with chipotle powder, salt, garlic powder, ground black pepper, and olive oil. Bake them for 25-30 minutes, until the potatoes are soft in the inside, and crispy golden brown on the outside.

2. While the potatoes bake, prepare the brava sauce. Using a blender, combine your chipotle peppers, cream, garlic clove, and salt. Blend until smooth and creamy. You can always add more cayenne pepper, or chipotle powder, if you want this sauce to be spicier.

3. Once your potatoes are ready and cooled down a little, drizzle them with your brava sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

If you don't have a nonstick baking sheet, you can use a sheet of wax paper on top of the tray to prevent the potatoes from burning or sticking to the sheet.

Depending on the area where you live, you may find different brands of pepper or chili powder. This chili is not like paprika, which comes from bell peppers or sweet peppers. If you want a spicy brava sauce, you can use any chili or spicy powder. Here I use McCormick brand cayenne pepper.
